I have several small HDMI displays that provide "fake" EDID information and claim to be full 1920x1080 displays but are really something like 720x400.

I have to override the EDID value with a custom resolution to prevent the display from scaling the video and making my console text unreadable.

And how did you do this?
I tried everything on Retroflag and nothing works.

retroflag? Provide a link to what you have.

You can have custom resolution from using custom modeline in wayfire.ini, adding a custom mode to the kernel command line or using an EDID file with your custom timing.
As Retroflag is a third party HW provider you should ask them to support or find the relevant forum posts yourself.
