HATs and other add-ons • Re: Kingston NV2 2 TB io errors in Pi 5

The drive failed to boot reliably. I switched to booting from microSD and testing the card for file storage.
Kingston drives are 'so-so'
People testing Kingston products say both the controller chips and memory chips can change batch to batch. The same model sells in different countries with different chips inside.

Another potential problem. The case I use is metal and the flat PCIe pushes against the metal which could upset the signals. On one occasion, the drive booted a couple of times outside the case then would not boot inside the case. I will revert to a plastic open case with nothing touching the cable.

Outside of the case, it fails now as a boot drive. Just sits there with the boot screen trying to detect NVMe.

Had it at Gen 2 and tested at gen 3. Neither boots. Both sit there undetected. Gen 3 seems to work for data storage.

I have another brand that has not failed to boot but that is only 1 TB, not 2 TB. Sabrent Rocket Nano 2242 DRAM-less M.2 PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD model SB-2142 The Sabrent brand is expensive around here and I happened to find the 1 TB version in a promotional sale. If the 2 TB had dropped to something affordable, I would have bought that.
